About Benjamin Melody
A behaviour support practitioner working alongside participants, families and support teams to build practical, person-centred plans.
Experienced, relationship-based behaviour support
I'm a Behaviour Support Practitioner deemed suitable by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. I have more than 15 years of experience in the disability support sector and work with people of different ages, backgrounds and support needs.
Before becoming a Behaviour Support Practitioner, I worked in supported independent living and one-to-one community settings. This gave me a practical understanding of everyday life for people with disability, including those with complex physical, personal and behavioural support needs.
For the past four years, I have provided behaviour support across Sydney, Canberra and the NSW South Coast. I have supported people experiencing a broad range of behaviours of concern, including physical aggression, self-injury and repetitive or compulsive behaviours.
I believe effective behaviour support begins with building trust and understanding the person behind the behaviour. My approach combines person-centred, evidence-informed practice with practical strategies that can be realistically applied in everyday life.
I work collaboratively with participants, families and support teams to understand what a behaviour may be communicating and to develop supports that are meaningful, practical and sustainable.
My focus extends beyond reducing behaviours of concern. I aim to help each person experience a better quality of life, greater independence, stronger relationships and a greater sense of safety and understanding.
For the past 10 years, I have also enjoyed a volunteer role providing compassionate listening and practical assistance to people experiencing mental health and personal challenges, both in Australia and overseas. I am currently completing a Bachelor of Arts in Clerical Counseling – Family, with a minor in Social Work.
The most rewarding part of my work is seeing positive changes make a meaningful difference in the lives of participants, their families and the people who support them.
My approach
What guides the work
Understand before acting
Behaviour communicates something. The starting point is always understanding why it's happening, not jumping straight to a strategy.
Dignity and quality of life first
Support is built around what matters to the person, with the aim of improving quality of life and reducing reliance on restrictive practices over time.
Work with the whole team
Families, support workers, allied health professionals and support coordinators all have a part to play — plans are built with the team, not handed down to it.
Practical, plain-language plans
Strategies are written so the people using them day to day can understand and follow them with confidence.
Working in partnership
I'm not myself an NDIS-registered provider. Specialist behaviour support is delivered in partnership with, and under the NDIS registration of, Tranquil Trails Counselling and Therapy, a registered specialist behaviour support provider. The participant's service agreement is with Tranquil Trails Counselling and Therapy, with the engagement arranged through me — I contract independently as a behaviour support practitioner.
